As cyber-physical risks are on the rise, it’s important that security leaders and teams have a clear understanding of what cyber-physical convergence is, the related risks, potential impact, and key ways organizations can protect themselves against them.
The increasingly blurred lines between the cyber and physical worlds are not new to security leaders. They’ve seen the uptick in cyber-physical risks and are now focused on ensuring they can protect their organizations against them.
To date, the convergence of cyber and physical risks—whereby risks that originate in one domain have real and often significant ramifications in the other—haven’t been catastrophic. But there have been some close calls, notably the 2021 ransomware attacks on the Irish healthcare system and Colonial Pipeline.
While such events have garnered media attention and spurred government responses, cyber-physical security convergence is still viewed by many as an emerging risk. That calls for organizations across all industries to have an increased awareness and understanding of cyber-physical risk.
