Dataminr’s Product team explains how they built powerful new risk management capabilities into Dataminr Pulse with customers in mind to help them plan for, manage and respond to threats and events—all in one place.
Worldwide, by 2025, the volume of data generated, consumed, copied and stored is projected to be more than 180 zettabytes. It’s clear that we have more data than we can process—a fact that security professionals know well because a large part of their remit is to not just detect potential risks and critical events, but to extract only what is relevant to their organization, especially during critical, time-sensitive situations.
This is particularly important because there is an acceleration of high-impact events—such as severe weather, cyber crime, geopolitical conflicts—which are more frequent, unpredictable and faster-moving than ever. The result is an incredibly dynamic and complex risk landscape that businesses now have to navigate.
These are two of many pain points facing today’s corporate security leaders and teams. At Dataminr we know this because we regularly work with our large enterprise customers to identify and address their security challenges. Most recently, we worked with our customers to help address one of their most pressing needs—to make it simpler to manage risks and events from end-to-end, in one place.
The result is a newly-launched, AI-powered risk management capability, built with input from these customers. It’s a key component of the Dataminr Pulse for Corporate Security solution and has gotten positive feedback.
To help you better understand how it can improve security teams’ ability to manage and mitigate threats and disruptions—allowing them to protect their people and assets—we talked to the people who built the tool: the Dataminr Product team. Here we share their answers to common customer questions, as well as those posed by security leaders looking to learn more about Dataminr.
How does Dataminr Pulse’s risk management capability differ from others in the market?
It was designed with input from many of our largest corporate enterprise customers to ensure it provides as much value as possible. And, we built the risk management capability with one major goal in mind: simplifying customers’ workflows.
The seamless integration of incident and event management with Pulse’s real-time alerting, geovisualization and two-way notification capabilities enable security teams to effectively manage risks via one unified platform—creating a holistic view of risk and events, workflows, communication, actions, analysis and reporting.
Knowing how much time our customers invest in planning for threats and incidents, we have added a comprehensive set of new scenario planning and resource allocation capabilities, which let security leaders and teams prepare for risks—well before they occur—and known events such as executive travel or onsite customer events.
Will this end-to-end solution allow my team and me to communicate and collaborate, such as assigning tasks, checking off items, etc.?
Absolutely. Our risk management capability provides a highly collaborative workspace tailored to all the needs of a modern security professional. It helps you to proactively plan for and manage risks, increase coordination and improve internal transparency. Teams are able to collaborate ahead of and during events in real time, record events using predefined templates and Dataminr playbooks with clearly defined tasks that can be assigned to individuals and/or teams across the organization.
By using a centralized tool, teams can improve their ability to make operational and strategic decisions that protect their employees, business and brand. Customers tell us that streamlining all these processes is a welcome relief and cuts down on the hassle of navigating numerous tools and platforms. There is “no more email ping pong,” said one Dataminr Pulse customer.
The tool is called risk management. Can we use it to manage other ongoing events as well, or is it only reserved for risks and crises?
The capability allows corporate security teams to plan for, manage and respond to all types of events—whether a minor incident, massive crisis or something in between, such as executive travel, industry conference, national election and more. While most of our customers often use a Dataminr real-time alert as a catalyst for their risk management workflow—and then add new alerts to it as the incident unfolds—you can also create your own “events” in the tool to manage based on the information you’ve received from other sources.
Will it let me easily log my team’s activities and create incident reports?
Yes. The risk management capability’s audit trail feature provides “a single source of uneditable, undeniable truth,” as described by a Dataminr customer. The minute-by-minute automatic activity logs allow corporate security to monitor projects’ status comprehensively, as well as to conduct thorough post-incident team performance evaluations. There is no need to manually log entries or organize reports anywhere else.
The tool also has an automatic report generation feature, which produces a PDF report that contains important metadata such as name of event, date, timestamp, and all the who, what, where, when, why, and how of an incident. Teams can easily and quickly generate these reports at any point during an event, which proves useful when communicating with senior leadership and/or other key stakeholders.
How quickly can I create and close out incidents within the tool?
Every second counts when there is an impending threat or critical event. That’s why we built the risk management capability in a way that allows logged incidents to be created and closed in under a minute. This helps to ensure that, if an organization happens to face multiple incidents within a short amount of time, the security team can swiftly manage them simultaneously or one at a time before moving on to the next.
